  • What is ftlog?
ftlog is an alternative forum engine. It's not a web forum, it's an Internet forum because it's not just limited to web access. It doesn't present itself in a manner consistent with existing forum engines either, the bulk of which are copies of one another. Read about the
history of ftlog here, before going onto what makes this forum engine different.

    What is the WUS?
The WUS is essentially the pet name for the web client. i.e. connecting to the forum from your web browser. Compared to other web forums, we like to think out web client is very fast and direct. This is particulary felt on dial up or mobile connections.

    What is the SUS?
The SUS is a downloadable software client which acts as an online/offline forum reader. It's often a much much faster way to interact with the forums, even quicker than our fast WUS system!
Download the SUS from here. You will need a Windows based computer to use it.

Can I download the forum and run it on my own computer?
No, all our forums are remotely hosted. This is in the interest of optimum performance, reliability and security. They are also a lot easier to setup - just fill out one web form!

    How much do you charge?
It is free to create a forum. It is also free to use a forum. We may introduce a charge for very busy forums that put an unfair demand on the rest of our network. Pricing for this will generally be "at cost". i.e. We will not make a significant profit on it. This is because (where possible) we do not want to charge for people to use our forums! For your interest, we display the genuine bandwidth use of individual forums and even individual users.

Free forums? But I don't want to be overrun by banners, pop-ups and other annoying advertisements!
ftlog is generally a banner-free website! We hate banners, and we know you hate banners too. The only "advertisements" you might see are links to some of our website functions (such as the SUS forum reader/client).

Free forums AND no banners? Will you not go bust by the end of the year/month/today?
No! This project has been in development for a considerable duration (half a decade to get to BETA) so a lot of thought has gone into how this will work. Lot's of innovative and existing ideas were considered, but we eventually settled on a business model based around offering extra features to hardcore/enthusiastic users - such as the SUS software client - in exchange for a donation of your choosing. If you don't donate - fine, you can still use the forums at your leisure or run your own forum.

    Where can I donate?
    You can donate from the
donate.ftlog.org page. Select the sum you wish to donate and follow the onscreen prompts!

How do I know ftlog wont simply dissappear one day at the first time of trouble?
As explained earlier, the project has been half a decade in the making already (1999-2004) so we are fairly committed! Unlike larger companies we are also well placed to adapt to circumstances and change the way we operate in the interests of sustaining the service.
